Is it just me or does anyone else dislike painting and decorating? Personally, it's a chore that I hate with a passion. I've done a lot of it in years gone by, but now feel that I have far more interesting things to spend my time on. So we generally leave it to the professionals, and my regular decorator was booked months ago to refurbish 3 bedrooms. He was due to start at the beginning of August, but has put it back by a couple of months to early October.

But we have some friends coming to stay for a couple of days in 2 weeks time, and my wife has nagged me to start the decorating before they come. So I'm fed up and quite grumpy, but it's the lesser of two evils and not worth the earache that would result if I refuse. :(

I hate painting but find it's better with the correct tools. I have a 24" wide roller and pole for ceilings and a 12" roller for the walls, I always use Dulux Trade emulsion as you can get away with one good coat sometimes. Remember, preparation is key to a good result.

It's mainly wallpapering - just the ceiling that needs emulsion. Not worth me buying special tools as I definitely will NOT be doing it again.

Bloody guests should have booked into a hotel. I might suggest that next time.

I gutted our house when we purchased in 2012. I know where every pipe and cable goes. Painted every surface before the furniture and family moved in, but I shudder at the thought of doing it these days. The odd room has been redecorated, but after much duress from the Mrs and threats of conjugal rights being withdrawn. I started the very next day!!!!

I have added 115sq meters to my gaff since 2007, only just finished and now going round again. Total floor area is now 215sq meters and every room is a massive task to paint. The only saving grace is that it's all new plaster so very little prep to do, but loads of cracks appearing as it dries out even four years after being plastered.

I shouldn't complain really. It should get me plenty of 'brownie points' that I can use at opportune moments in the future. ;)

Decorating , is a never ending thing, you ve just finished every room in the house, and guess what? it s time to go back to the beginning and start all over again , so don t rush it, it ll still need decorating tomorrow, or the next day.

@Verbarthe You've never worked on the Forth Bridge, have you? :D

Before it needs doing again, I think that I'll just sell up and downsize to somewhere that has just been done.

I can wallpaper quite well but not keen on it. I've painted many rooms in the past but even though I don't find it difficult I agree that it's a chore and can be a waste of a pleasant afternoon that would otherwise be spent outside.. I do it myself mainly to save a few bob (in true Yorkshire style). Electrics, plumbing and general DIY I am quite happy to do myself where I can :)
