Just bought an Audi A2 Sport for my son as a project -he's not 17 until March so we have time to do the necessary. Firstly it had failed the MOT on broken rear springs, front pads and a blowing exhaust, all fairly easy to fix. It has a panoramic roof that doesn't retract, I need info on fixing this, and I need advice on which oil to use? The engine is 1.4 VW unit and I know we have some VW enthusiasts on here. I guess I should also change the cam belt? The body is in surprisingly good condition for a 14 year old, but it does only have two owners. £400, bargain I think, what do you guys reckon?

At that price and as a father son project and " starter kit " kit for your son I can t see how you can possibly go wrong with it to be honest . Looks to be an honest car that just needs a little help , good idea.(y)

Sounds like a bargain and the ideal car for a new driver, once you've sorted the jobs out. (y)

Great choice, and lots of useful information on the A2 forum.
We had ours new in 2002 and it's just turned over to 30000 miles.
It lives in the garage and is showroom fresh not even a stone chip.
It gets an annual service and a cambelt every five years other than that it has not cost me a penny.
    Enjoy!

    Kindest Regards
    Carl.

Carl, does yours have the open sky roof? It's proving very difficult to get any information on the mechanism - it tilts but does not retract.

No sorry no roof on mine, they seem to be quite troublesome but there is lots of info about them on the A2OC forum.
From memory it's a difficult fix and most people seem to just leave them broken.
Just between us the forum is good but they're not as happy as we are here. There is a little bit of infighting and name calling.

    Kindest Regards
    Carl.

Ok, thanks. I have signed up to A2OC and had a good read, seems there is a place in Milton Keynes who repair the open sky system.

Sounds promising I'm sure we're quite similar in that if it's fitted we like it working as it should.

    Kindest Regards
    Carl.

Indeed, I see it as a challenge to get it working and I won't be satisfied until it is.

Is that to guard against belt deterioration, at those low miles?

I would love to pimp but have to think of insurance for a 17 year old. Probably limited to refurbishing the alloys, privacy rear glass and double DIN Nav unit.

That appears to be all they want nowadays. Mine has the double DIN unit, paid for by us as we wanted a hands free phone solution to keep him on the right side of the law.
He did the tints for £300 somewhere near Park Royal industrial estate and is busy saving his summer wages for new alloys. Looks to be a nice car - may he have 100,000 safe miles with her.

So a large box of bits arrived yesterday including new airvents (the ones in the car are broken), a new smarter head light switch, new centre console (to rid the holes left by a mobile phone cradle, a new jacking point cover, Mintex brake disc's and Mintex pads - all for £95! That's my weekends work cut out.
Lepson's are picking the wheels up on Tuesday for a refurb, then I just have to replace the rear springs for the MOT. If all goes to plan we have a really nice car for under a grand.

yes, he is actually very keen to get stuck in and is good with his hands, he helped me with my last brake pad change on the GT.
He's just got a few A's and A*'s in his GCSE's so I said I'd get the wheels refurbished for him for doing so well.
