Found the cable end for this gadget taped underneath the rear shelf with the cable running through the rubber seal into the boot recess and then attached to this black box by the battery!

No idea what it is, it isn't BMW branded and it wasn't screwed to the body. It's been wired into the loom as an after market fit, it is not a factory install.

Any clue as to what it is?!

Where the wires connect reminds me of a tracker monitor unit but they used to be metal but that was probably 10 years or so ago so could now be plastic. Where do the rest of the wires go? Can you uncover more of the label?

I found a similar box and have since disconnected
The aerial/antenna/receiver was located under the parcel shelve ledge, next to the rear speaker

    IMG_3011.JPG

The reason I disconnected was my driving habits had the car layed up for 3 weeks at a time on return I received increased battery discharge messages.

The tracker was still active and I could locate car on phone, so whilst a purposeful find, I primarily never knew about it, so never informed insurance, could live without it and its battery drain, favouring good battery health

    Ps
markyboyt educated me on its function

The cable end stuck to the tape was stuck under the parcel shelf, the cable ran down the rubber seal to the box hidden in the boot. Not a very secret install!

There is no branding on the box. Might give Tracker a call to see if it's on their system.

Have you Google'd any of the writing on the box......the bar code, or what looks like a makers name [ending in ...'xtek']?

My initials thought was it's a multimedia unit of some description. That would explain the cable coming into rear parcel shelf maybe?

I'm reliably informed it's a Tracker - a poorly installed one at that! Will give them a call next week to see for sure if it's available for use still via subscription etc. I will tidy up the install if it is and reactive it.

Spoke to Tracker and they confirmed it's one of theirs and they can see it's still active!

For me to subscribe the costs are excessive though:

    £30 transfer for + £179 for a year or £449 for 3 years.

I have GAP insurance already too! Choices.....

I've stripped the boot out and reinstalled it more discreetly. Tracker advised Arden's fitted it - I found it in 30 seconds!!!!! They are supposed to be hidden away.

My kids black box was installed hidden away better than that, shocking.

Personally I don't want the car back if it's taken and ragged about.

Interesting point. What happens if you (want to) refuse it?

At a guess I'd think unless they have paid out it's yours and you have no choice.

Correct, this happened to me, they wouldn't pay out as the car was returned.
